'How To Build A PC' By The Tech Report

"So, you want to build a PC. The process is a lot easier than you might expect, even if you've never pieced together all the components that make up a typical system. Although the underlying technologies are often stupendously complex, modern PCs are no more complicated to assemble than the average piece of Ikea furniture."

G.Skill F3-2666C11D-8GTXD on NinjaLane

"Performance aside the TridentX modules are quite versitale by not only offering higher default frequencies but also having the user options. The coolest of these isthe ability to remove the red heatsink across the top. This becomes important when installing large aircoolers that overhang the memory area. In the past you may have had to replace your memory modules or go with a different cooling solution but, with the TridentX you can gain an extra half an inch by removing the heatsink which should alleviate many of the fitment problems associated with modern day air coolers."

Thermaltake Armor Revo Gene Chassis Review By OverclockersClub

"the Gene retains the essence of what makes the Thermaltake Armor Revo the great case it is. From the exterior you are hard pressed to tell the difference between them. To begin with, the Revo Gene retains the width and depth of the full tower version while giving back only three inches in height (one bay worth). This means that the Revo Gene will be able to house the largest of graphics cards for an all-out gaming build. Thermaltake has also kept the nifty top hot-swap Dock-X system, the hidden HDD bay, and even the cool looking 'breathe' lighting effect."

Noctua NH-L9i & NH-L9a Low Profile CPU Coolers On NiKKTech

"Granted you can find many other low-profile CPU coolers in the market (like the NH-C14/NH-C12/NH-L12 by Noctua) but to my knowledge the NH-L9 is currently the lowest/smallest one around and once you combine that with its performance, build quality and low noise levels it's really not hard to understand how impressive it is which is also why it gets our Golden Award."

Noctua NH-L12 CPU Cooler On eTeknix

"Awarding the Noctua NH-L12 is a tough one. It could have our innovation award for being such a unique product in the HTPC/SFF market. SweetFX Mod For The Awesome FREE To Play Rise Of Flight

"SweetFX is a DirectX injector (or some crazy thing) that pre-empts your usual graphics appearance and imposes it's own settings which includes some cool colors settings, contrasts, HDR tweaks, post effects and a certain kind of anti-ailiasing. It works the same way as the old ENBSeries mod from a while back. Only this one has more features."

Jason - 777 Studios

Check out Jason's post on the SimHQ forums. He's included a bunch of split screenshots showing the graphics overlay in action.... Pretty sweet!

Haven't come across RoF before? From their website:

"Rise of Flight is a next generation WWI combat flight simulator for the PC. Immerse yourself in realistic aerial combat above the trenches. Fly famous aircraft including the Fokker Dr.1, Sopwith Camel, S.E.5a and Albatros D.Va. and many more!"

This top shelf WWI era simulator is FREE TO PLAY as mentioned earlier, you can download the game which includes an aircraft for both sides of the conflict. You can then choose to purchase additional aircraft to taste from the online shop - but the game is completely playable with just the included free aircraft, in both multi and single player modes....

That might just leave you with the funds to pick up a quality flight controller and a TrackIR5 - You'll want both to get the best from this amazing sim!

BattleTech Marauder Instrumental In Russian Revolution Of 1917!

"The VCE exam body has been left red faced after a doctored artwork depicting a huge robot helping socialist revolutionaries during the Russian Revolution was accidentally included in this year’s year 12 history exam taken by 5700 students.

Exams for the popular History: Revolution subject were original supposed to include the artwork Storming the Winter palace on 25th October 1917 by Nikolai Kochergin, which depicts events during the October Revolution, which was instrumental in the larger Russian Revolution of 1917.

But when students opened their exam this morning they found an altered version of the work with what appear to be a large "BattleTech Marauder" robot aiding the rising revolutionaries in the background."

Assassin's Creed 'Rise' Unchained Oct 31st..... Game On!

The popular cross platform game series Assassin's Creed has the next edition released tomorrow..... Due to the grass roots cross platform development of the title, this series plays best with a gamepad, rather than the traditional gaming mouse and keyboard. Time to consider an additional controller?

Tom's Hardware Compare Windows 7 & 8 Gaming Performance

"Of the 10 games we benchmarked, one one demonstrated a significant difference in moving from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and only on Nvidia's GeForce GTX 660. That game was Borderlands 2, where our average measured frame rate dropped from 86.6 to 81 FPS. But at that speed, the five-frame drop is hardly worth fretting over.

More bothersome was the compatibility issue we ran into in Sleeping Dogs, which affected Windows 8, but not Windows 7. When we chose the High detail preset, most of the in-game models simply disappeared. Fortunately, that geometry shows up again if you dial down the graphics quality. Hardly a favorable solution, but it's what we have for now.

Aside from those couple of idiosyncrasies, performance under Windows 8 is indistinguishable from Windows 7. Any speed-up or slow-down would be almost impossible to identify during game play, and we expect compatibility issues to get patched quickly by game developers."

Don Woligroski - Tom's Hardware

Slashdot Discussion: The Essence Of The PC Revolution Is Closer To Realization Than Ever Before...

"As tablets and computer-phones flood the market, the headlines read: "The Personal Computer is Dying." But they are only half true: an artifact of the PC is dying, but the essence of the PC revolution is closer to realization than ever before, while also being closer to loss than ever before.

Certainly one way to define the Personal Computer stems from the era of the IBM PC: a gray box with a monitor, mouse, and keyboard (or a laptop). But the idea of the Personal Computer dates back quite a while — back to Alan Kay's Dynabook, the Lisp Machine, etc.

The Apple Knowledge Navigator provided a vision of personal computing far more dynamic than that dull gray box. Although still a pale comparison, tablet and phone platforms are beginning to look awfully similar.

The essence of those pre-PC Personal Computers was that of the user controlling the device. You control the data, you control the software; the Personal Computer is a uniquely personal artifact that the user adapts to his own working style. One consequence of this is that creating is as easy (perhaps easier) as consuming content. Another nice side effect is that your data remains private by virtue of local storage."

Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 CPU Cooler Review On Vortez

"NH-D14 SE2011 doesn’t disappoint. Noctua continue to give a strong bundle within the packaging; dual cooling fans, thermal paste, low noise adapters, secuFirm 2 and a helpful installation guide tout this as a packaging scheme for others to follow. We’ve been a fan of SecuFirm since the early days as it offers a simple, no-fuss method of installing the cooler to the motherboard. Further to this Noctua pre-attach the mounting screws to the cooler and fan clips to the cooling fans which results in a completely hassle-free installation.

The results on the preceding pages demonstrate that the D14 SE2011 can handle Sandy Bridge-E with no questions asked. The thermal design of the heatsink on its own tackles the problem of heat clearly from the passive results. Let’s not forget Noctua were the first to bring to market the dual-radiator design and these guys know what they are doing."

APH Networks Review Thermaltake's Water 2.0 Pro CPU Cooler

"Combining the performance characteristics of a water cooler and the simple, maintenance free virtues of a traditional air cooler, there is a lot to like about the company's latest foray into the integrated closed loop liquid cooling system market. Or should I say, it blows the competition out of the water, haha. Its relatively low noise operation and proven performance on our charts simply speaks for itself. SimHQ Discussion: How Formation Flying Is Used Tactically & Why Is It Done?

Q: "Can you describe how formation flying is used tactically? We see some fancy formations (parade, diamond, etc.) in the virtual airshows, but I'm really curious to know how formations are used by Real(tm) combat pilots.

A: Good question, but one with a number of answers.

First, we have to define the subject a little. We'll talk fighters, not bombers, transports, etc. Then we define 'tactical' as compared to 'strategic'...that means we are looking at relatively simple, short range conventional weapon missions (both A2A and A2G). And then we have to define the era...are we looking at today's tactical environment...or that of the 60s...WW2...or WW1? Obviously, such a singular focus makes a difference...

A final note before I turn this back to you folks...In my sim flying, I found that the ability to maintain an effective position on another aircraft was a function of three things. One, obviously, the pilot had to know the basics of maintaining position...two, the sim viewing system had to be flexible enough to allow a visual picture of what was going on (perhaps something like Track IR was good for this), and lastly, the pilot's controllers (throttle and stick) had to be able to transmit the fine detail of control need for formation flight."

Read the full discussion on SimHQ's forums. You'll note that when it comes to sim flying, it boils down to three things - pilot skill, a TrackIR and a quality flight controller. We can help you with two of those......

HardwareHeaven Review Tt eSports' Level 10M Mouse

"So that brings us to the performance where the Level 10 M scores particularly well. The mouse feels very fast at 5000DPI (default) and beyond with accurate tracking and good response to precise movements. The scroll wheel could do with a touch extra resistance to clicks but the left and right buttons feel great, balanced perfectly just like the weight of the mouse which makes it exceptionally easy to game with over longer sessions."

Noctua NH-L12 Low Profile CPU Cooler Reviewed By APH Networks

"Some say the Noctua NH-L12 is a legendary NHL hockey player that hypes the crowd to a roar. Others say it is a quiet night owl keeping watch at night. All we know is that the Noctua NH-12 is a very compact and quiet heatsink delivering very impressive cooling results. Noctua comes out with yet another heatsink that many would say many good things about, but there is really almost nothing to complain about. Simple and clean are my first impressions, while keeping the originality of the design from previous models. However, even with simple designs, the Noctua NH-L12 is solidly built with noise reduction in mind"

Something Very Special For The Virtual Pilots - Rise Of Flight 1.028B Released + DLC Aircraft Sale!

"This past Monday we released to you the results of our work on version 1.028 and the first seaplane for ROF. We have been pleasantly surprised by your positive comments and that you like this aircraft. However, on Tuesday, we discovered how to apply a new set of equations that makes the physics of the interaction with water even better. This idea has come to our mind because of your strong reaction to the W.12. That is why today we are ready to present version 1.028b of Rise of Flight.

Now all planes, not just the new seaplane will interact with the water’s surface in a more realistic manner. It doesn’t matter if you touch water with a wheel or wing or make an emergency landing after losing the landing gear. This is something completely new for us and something we are very proud of and something that we have done in a very short period, just a couple days. We liked it so much we decided to release it right away."

Loft - RoF Team

777 Studios RoF 1.028B release announcement on 777's website & DLC aircraft sale. Can't wait for the Felixtowe F2A to be released!

The beauty of Rise Of Flight is that its FREE TO PLAY! A complete game is supplied on the download link, with a free aircraft for both the allied and axis powers. You simply purchase any additional aircraft and field mods to suit your own taste, should you wish to - the game will function 100% both on and offline with just the free to play download. Think Call Of Duty has fun multiplayer???? Wait till you try a furball with 20 or so WWI kites swirling and whirling all over the sky!!!

To get more out of the game, however, you'll want to put some in.... Consider a flight controller upgrade and a TrackIR, both will really increase your enjoyment of the game!

We'll see you after your sortie in the pilot's mess!!!

Thrustmaster F1 Wireless Gamepad Ferrari 150th Italia Alonso Edition Review On eTeknix

"There we have it, the Alonso Editon of the Thrustmaster F1 Wireless PC Gamepad, a very sleek and stylish looking dual analogue (plus micky mouse ear) controller for PC and Playstation 3, but is it a great controller or not? That is the major question is it not. While it did do rather well in my tests, I’d even go as far as saying I like the controller, I’m not sure that I am the person it’s marketed towards, I’m not an F1 fan my self but I do like the style and general design of the controller, the ergonomics of it feel comfortable too, so I’ll give Thrustmaster a plus point on those accounts."

Logitech's C920 HD Pro Webcam On NiKKtech

"The C910 HD Pro Webcam was the best consumer oriented high definition webcam to ever land in my hands up until 2011 (not a small thing) although not very surprising since we are talking about a product designed and manufactured by Logitech. Of course that also means that Logitech had their job cut out for them since improving an already great product across the board is never an easy task. As a result the new C920 HD Pro Webcam may follow the design lines of the original C910 but packs quite a few improvements such as Full HD 1080p video call capability (supported by Skype), 15MP (Megapixel) stills and an new base/stand designed from the ground up."

eTeknix Check Out Logitech's G27 Racing Kit For PC & Playstation

"We’ve tested a few wheels out here at eTeknix, with the slightly cheaper MadCatz Xbox 360 wheel and the much more expensive Thrustmaster T500RS, so where does this one fit in? well given it’s price is around £200 cheaper than the Thrustmaster, it’s performance is much closer to the T500RS than the MadCatz, which in it’s self is a fantastic wheel, but the one we reviewed was only for the Xbox 360, but while it’s not as specialist as Thrustmasters effort, the addition of the gear level, more compact build and exceptional performance make this a real bang for buck contender, while it’s price might make a few eyes water, you really do get your moneys worth with the Logitech, but it’s the performance that has earned it our award, not it’s price, which is why I am happy to award the Logitech G27 our Gamers Choice Award."

Thrustmaster T-Wireless Gamepad For PC & Playstation Review On eTeknix

"For me personally the best solution I have found for this controller is for my son, he’s only 5 years old and loves to play on the Playstation 3, with the cost of an official controller now around the £50 mark, I feel a lot more comfortable with him using this, with it’s lower price point making it less of a concern if he were to damage it and also its slightly smaller size fits his hands much better than mine.

The build quality is rather good too, it’s moulded out of really durable plastics, so it should survive a few knocks and bumps with ease and given its small size, it’s also perfect for chucking in the bottom of your bag should you need a compact controller for your laptop when traveling."

Innovation - The Most Abused Word In Tech Circles?

"The iPad is about as innovative as the toaster. You can still read books without an iPad, and you can still toast bread without a toaster. Trainz 12, as it's known, is a very immersive gaming title. It's had me hooked for well over a year now being one of those rare games that delivers more enjoyment the 'deeper you go'. One of the reasons Trainz is so immersive is the driver experience combining Cab Mode in game, with NaturalPoint's TrackIR 5.

eTeknix Take A Close Look At Tt's 5G USB3 HDD Dock

"The main area that we have to look at is how the dock performs. Like we would expect, there is going to be a slight amount of loss in performance, but to aid against this, the BlacX 5G comes with full USB3.0 functionality and with performance levels being virtually the same, we can safely say that the dock does not impede the drives performance at all."

Successful Online Retail - It's All In The Details....

"Luke Ryan had worked in sales and marketing for two years in Sweden when he began forming a plan for a new online retail start up. At the time, he met his business partner Asa Nystrom, who was able to take on the buying role required for the concept... SimHQ Gets A Development Update On "Wings Over Flanders Fields" WWI Combat Flight Sim

"There he was, smoking at first, then on fire, high above me. As he lost height, the fire got worse, bits of his kite started tearing off and he started coming at me by design or by chance, I don't know. The fire was by now engulfing his bus and I thought that he would surely take me with him in a fiery collision, but somehow he missed me by the smallest possible of margins, and I just sat there for what seemed like a very long time, unable to move."

...This, to me, is the essence of what first class simulation is about. It makes you start thinking about the pilots in the real war, realizing with renewed acuity how they must have seen, for real, such horrifying sights over and over again, perhaps within a very short time-span, wearing on their courage and the quality of most young men; their total and absolute conviction that they are immortal and invulnerable, giving them bad dreams when in fitful sleep and in waking nightmares in the skies by day they wonder; when will my luck run out, when will the dice come down against me.

Tt eSPORTS Black Element Mouse Review By Metku

"The Black Element was the first product we review from Tt esports' product range, and it turned out to be an excellent new mouse. The shape is very different from my usual favorites such as the Mionix Naos and Qpad 5K, but in action it turned out to be very comfortable. The mouse also packs all the features imaginable, it has a 6500 DPI sensor, plenty of extra buttons, weight system and fancy lights."

Thermaltake Water 2.0 Enclosed Liquid Coolers Reviewed By OverclockersClub

"My first impressions of these two water cooling units were good. I liked the compact nature, the quiet fan specifications, the flexible tubing and the swivel fittings all helped overcome the bar where I expected these units to be. I will admit that the installation process, being unique, took me by surprise and I had to clarify several things in the manual. Other than that, the installation process went smoothly and I have no complaints."

CH Products Flight Sim Yoke USB - Cessna Pilot Says Its The Real Deal!

"The yoke felt very much like the Cessna's that I fly, albeit a bit lighter weight. The resistance was a little surprising, very stiff, which is good for cross country flying. It took a little getting used to the button locations, especially the hat switch, but after a few hours it falls right into my grasp. Having an 8-position hat switch sure makes the landing pattern easier to fly, and with all the buttons on the yoke I don't need to touch the keyboard."
